Four Latham Lawyers Named 2020 Rising Stars

Diverse group of honorees recognized by Law360 for advising clients in key practice areas.

Four talented Latham lawyers have been named 2020 Rising Stars by Law360 for advising clients on notable work in cutting-edge areas of practice. The honorees were selected from among more than 1,300 nominees for their career accomplishments to date in their respective disciplines.

The Latham honorees are:

Dean W. Baxtresser, a litigation and trial counsel in the White Collar Defense & Investigations Practice, named in the Government Contracts category. Based in Washington, D.C., his practice primarily focuses on complex commercial litigation involving the False Claims Act, as well as government investigations, government contract disputes, and bid protests. He regularly advises companies undergoing government audits and investigations, and he represents clients in government contract matters before the US Court of Federal Claims, US Government Accountability Office, and numerous federal and state contracting agencies.

Basil Al-Jafari, a corporate counsel in Latham’s Capital Markets Practice, recognized in the Capital Markets category. Based in Dubai, Al-Jafari advises on initial public offerings, debt capital markets transactions (both conventional and Sukuk issuances), equity investments, debt restructurings, and other general corporate finance matters. He recently played a key role on the Latham team that advised the underwriters of the US$29.4 billion initial public offering by Saudi Aramco in December 2019, the largest IPO of all time.

Alfred Y. Xue, a finance partner in the Banking Practice, named in Law360’s Banking category. Based in New York, he represents lead arrangers, direct lenders, and other financial institutions in leveraged finance transactions, with a particular focus on cross-border transactions and acquisition financings. In 2019 Xue represented the lead arrangers in the financing of Brookfield Business Partners L.P.’s US$13.2 billion acquisition of Johnson Controls’ Power Solutions Business. He was also recently named a rising star by the New York Law Journal, which recognized him for leading “complex financings for an exceptional roster of clients around the world.”

Fiona M. Maclean, a corporate partner in the Data & Technology Transactions Practice, honored in the Fintech category. Based in London, she advises a diverse range of clients on data privacy compliance and complex IT and business processing transactions, with a focus on operational resiliency risks and data strategy for the financial services sector. Her work at the nexus of the commercial and data worlds includes advising on some of the most transformational cloud deals in the global market.
