Latham & Watkins is pleased to announce that Alexander Stefan Rieger has been appointed Managing Partner of the firm’s German offices, effective May 2026. He succeeds Burc Hesse, who has held that position since 2020 and is now completing his term. Max Hauser will continue to serve as Deputy Managing Partner of the German offices.

“Stefan is an outstanding leader, and he will serve with great distinction in his new role. He brings extensive experience, a deep understanding of Latham’s culture and strengths, as well as drive and entrepreneurial spirit, which will support the continued growth of our German offices. We have a formidable team in Germany and are poised to build on our strong momentum,” said Rich Trobman, Chair and Managing Partner of Latham & Watkins. “We are also deeply grateful to Burc, who has done a terrific job leading the German offices to new heights and has played a key role in building our presence in Germany.”

Rieger is widely regarded as one of Europe’s leading digital infrastructure and energy M&A lawyers, with a wealth of experience advising infrastructure funds, private equity investors, pension funds, insurance companies, and corporates on complex M&A transactions and projects in the international infrastructure and energy sector.

“Thanks to the strong leadership of Burc and our exceptional team in Germany, we are well positioned to build on our success in this dynamic market. Our unique set-up in Germany ideally enables us to handle the most complex, cross-border matters. Looking ahead, we have strong ambitions for this important market,” said Rieger.

In 2026, Latham & Watkins celebrates its 25th anniversary in Germany, marking an exceptional period of growth. Latham recently announced that renowned private equity and M&A partners Markus Paul, Wessel Heukamp, Verena Nosch, and Carsten Haak will join the firm, further strengthening its already market-leading practice. Latham’s German offices comprise 180 lawyers, including 50 partners.
