Anthemis Economou advises clients on all aspects of EU competition law, with a particular focus on complex mergers and acquisitions.

Anthemis combines sophisticated economic analysis and her international perspective to represent multinational companies and private equity funds before the European Commission and other competition authorities globally in:

She guides clients across industries on merger and antitrust investigations around the globe, leveraging the firm’s robust platform and spearheading efforts with local counsel and economic advisors to efficiently navigate multiple regulatory filing processes for complex deals, including the EU Regulation on Foreign Subsidies (FSR).

Anthemis is the local leader of the Parent Lawyers Group and previously served as a member of the firm’s Pro Bono Committee and as local leader of the Women’s Lawyers Group.

Before joining Latham, Anthemis practiced at another international law firm in Brussels and trained at the European Commission’s Directorate General for Competition. Her experience also includes advising on Greek competition, regulatory, and corporate law. 

Anthemis frequently assists clients in obtaining global merger clearances for their planned transactions. Her recent merger cases include advising:

  • Global companies in a variety of sectors on the implementation of the EU Regulation on Foreign Subsidies, including handling the first filing ever submitted under the new regulation and the first inspection launched under the FSR for Nuctech, a Chinese security equipment supplier
  • One Rock Capital on its US$2 billion acquisition of Constantia Flexibles and follow-on acquisition of rival Aluflexpack (EC Phase I clearance with remedies)
  • Thermo Fisher in obtaining:  
    • CMA Phase 1 and German Phase 2 unconditional clearance of its US$3.1 billion acquisition of Olink
    • Global merger control clearances for its acquisition of Solventum, a leader in purification and filtration products
  • Luxury fashion platform Farfetch on expanding its luxury new retail partnership with an agreement to acquire a 47.5% stake in YOOX Net-a-Porter (YNAP) and subsequent acquisition by Coupang
  • Paramount-Skydance in its potential acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery.
  • Tenneco, a manufacturer of automotive ride control and emission control products and systems, on its US$7 billion acquisition by Apollo Global Management
  • MGM on its US$9 billion acquisition by Amazon
  • Aon on its:
    • Planned US$30 billion acquisition of Willis Towers Watson
    • Contemplated US$3.57 billion sale of WTW assets to Gallagher
  • Hyundai Motor Group on its US$4 billion joint venture with Aptiv for an autonomous driving platform

Anthemis' recent cartel / antitrust experience includes advising:

  • Coca-Cola HBC in an investigation into an alleged abuse of dominance by the European Commission involving conditional discounts in the modern trade sector. In February 2023, the European Commission announced the closure of the investigation without bringing any charge against our client
  • A fashion retailer on the current EC cartel investigation in the fashion sector
  • An electricity grid operator on an EC 102 investigation resulting in a fine for the incumbent electricity supplier
  • A global financial institution facing an EC cartel investigation into the trading of foreign exchange products, which was ultimately dropped in May 2020 without bringing any charge against our client
  • Leading firms in the technology, pharmaceutical, and fast-moving consumer goods sectors on behavioral aspects of their business activities
