Alexandra (Aly) Highsmith is an associate in the Washington, D.C. office of Latham & Watkins and a member of the firm’s Litigation & Trial Department. Her practice focuses on government and internal investigations and white-collar criminal defense.

Aly has represented clients in investigations before Congress, the Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, and other domestic regulators. She has also counseled clients on compliance with, and investigations related to, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and other US anti-corruption laws. Aly leverages her background as a certified public accountant to bring an understanding of complex financial statement risk and accounting issues to these matters.

In addition, Aly conducts sensitive internal investigations into workplace conduct challenges, including allegations of harassment, discrimination, bullying, and retaliation, and counsels clients on best practices for developing and implementing anti-harassment compliance programs. She also advises clients in the healthcare, higher education, asset management, and other sectors on reviews and risk assessments involving DEI practices, health equity programs, and other civil rights and equity-related initiatives.

A committed firm citizen, Aly is a member of Latham’s Associates Committee and previously served on the Recruiting Committee.

Aly previously served as a law clerk to Judge Peter J. Messitte of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. Prior to law school, she was a certified public accountant at a global accounting firm serving asset management clients and nonprofit foundations.

Aly’s experience includes:

  • Advising a major university on comprehensive, system-wide reviews of internal DEI practices and health equity programs
  • Assisting a large nonprofit healthcare system in conducting a comprehensive, system-wide review of its internal DEI practices and patient-facing health equity programs, as well as equity initiatives within the system’s graduate medical education program, affiliate medical school, and affiliate colleges of health sciences
  • Advising a leading alternative asset management firm on a comprehensive assessment of race-conscious investment initiatives
  • Assisting multiple companies with sensitive internal investigations and reviews related to workplace misconduct, including alleged racial and gender-based discrimination
  • Representing public and private companies, as well as their officers and employees, in SEC investigations involving alleged accounting, financial reporting, and insider trading issues
  • Representing a multinational healthcare company in responding to various congressional investigations and in appearances before congressional committees
  • Representing employees of a global asset management firm in connection with inquiries by the SEC related to off-channel communications
  • Representing global member firms of a Big Four accounting firm in inquiries conducted by the PCAOB
  • Assisting a global manufacturing company in conducting a cross-border investigation into alleged bribery by employees
  • Representing a leading loan provider in numerous class action lawsuits alleging violations of US securities laws and regulations
