Latham and AFME Develop Roadmap to Help Financial Institutions Embed Sustainable Finance Into Strategy and Governance

September 10, 2020
Practical resource supports firms as they navigate a transition to sustainable finance.

Latham & Watkins has collaborated with the Association for Financial Markets in Europe (AFME) to produce: Governance, Conduct and Compliance in the Transition to Sustainable Finance, a first-of-its-kind roadmap to assist financial services firms with establishing and furthering their corporate purpose, objectives, and strategy in relation to sustainable finance.

Focused on the European regulatory framework, the practical resource sets out 15 key principles that boards and leaders at financial institutions should consider when developing their approach, including addressing issues and opportunities integrating and embedding ESG principles into internal programmes.

“We are delighted to have worked with AFME and its members to create a framework to support the transition to sustainable finance for the financial services industry,” commented Nicola Higgs, a financial regulatory partner in Latham & Watkins’ London office. “Financial services firms are key players in driving the sustainability agenda of global regulators, and this resource provides a framework to help navigate this burgeoning and important area.”

Richard Middleton, AFME Managing Director, Head of Policy Division, added: “Sustainable finance is a fast-moving area and the regulatory environment is evolving rapidly. As all areas of firms’ businesses are affected in the transition to sustainable finance, it is important that firms establish and develop their corporate strategy, governance, purpose and objectives. The report is intended as a roadmap to help senior management and the board to embed sustainable finance in a holistic and systematic manner across the business.”

Governance, Conduct and Compliance in the Transition to Sustainable Finance is the latest addition to a suite of information produced by Latham & Watkins on the topic of sustainable finance and closely follows the launch of the firm’s inaugural Book of Jargon® – Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) earlier this year.
