Award recognizes remarkable achievements and developments in IP law in the past year.

Global Co-Chair of Latham & Watkins’ Intellectual Property Litigation Practice, David Callahan, has been named Illinois Outstanding IP Litigator of the Year by Managing Intellectual Property as part of the publication’s 2019 Americas Awards program, recognizing remarkable achievements and developments in IP law in the past year. Callahan was honored for winning US$13.3 million in attorneys’ fees for Latham client Zimmer, Inc. (now known as ZimmerBiomet) following its successful invalidation of four patents held by its competitor Howmedica Osteonics (the orthopedics subsidiary of Stryker, Inc.). This was the latest (and hopefully the last) chapter in patent litigation that Callahan handled since Howmedica commenced it in 2005, and that included district court litigation, Patent Trial & Appeal Board proceedings, and multiple Federal Circuit appeals.

Callahan, who is a partner in Latham’s Chicago office, represents clients in complex litigation in the areas of patent, trademark, trade secret, false advertising, and unfair competition. He represents clients in a range of industries, including medical devices, semiconductors, consumer products, and automotive products. Callahan has particularly significant experience representing medical device and orthopedic manufacturers both as plaintiffs and defendants. He develops winning strategies for clients based on his more than 25 years of experience as a trial lawyer, litigating bench and jury trials, as well as before the Federal and Seventh Circuit Courts of Appeal.
