Ben Gibson is an environmental lawyer focusing on contaminated properties. Mr. Gibson defends clients against environmental claims brought by the US Environmental Protection Agency and state agencies, environmental groups, and other potentially responsible parties in federal and state courts. He has negotiated consent decrees with state and federal regulators, as well as private party settlements. He serves as the lead associate on a number of complex contaminated sites, and is responsible for negotiating with supervising agencies and identifying opportunities to minimize or avoid client liabilities.
For his environmental clients, Mr. Gibson negotiates remediation contracts, conducts due diligence, advises on business strategy and internal management, and provides representation in commercial and real estate disputes.
Mr. Gibson also has experience advising clients on other environmental matters, including air quality, water quality, chemical regulation, and project-siting.
Mr. Gibson has an active pro bono practice in immigration and family law. He represents clients in court for matters such as asylum and guardianship, has advised nonprofit organizations on compliance and internal governance issues, and helped develop model language for the environmental provisions of future African mining laws.
While in law school, Mr. Gibson interned at the North Carolina Sustainable Energy Association and served as a student attorney with the Duke Environmental Law and Policy Clinic, where he focused on public trust issues and the Clean Water Act.
Before practicing law, Mr. Gibson worked as a public affairs consultant in Los Angeles specializing in government relations and community outreach in support of renewable energy projects and residential, commercial, and institutional developments.
