Latham Named 2020 Law Firm of the Year

December 1, 2020
Firm wins the most practice group awards to earn a top spot in Law360’s annual rankings.

For the second consecutive year, Latham & Watkins has been named a Law Firm of the Year by Law360 “for guiding landmark deals, scoring victories in high-profile disputes and helping companies navigate uncharted legal seas made rough by the coronavirus pandemic."

The honor is based on Law360’s annual recognitions for 2020 Practice Groups of the Year, where Latham practice and industry groups were selected in eight Law360 categories, the most of any law firm. The categories include banking, capital markets, cybersecurity & privacy, energy, mergers & acquisitions, private equity, securities litigation, and sports & betting.

In Latham’s published profile, firm leaders highlighted the collaboration and teamwork across practice areas by Latham teams advising clients on market-pacing transactional, regulatory, and litigation matters – such as advising the underwriters in Saudi Aramco’s US$29.4 billion IPO, the largest of all time, and the successful defense of the U.S. Soccer Federation in a high-profile pay discrimination lawsuit brought by the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team.

Michele Johnson, Global Chair of the firm’s Litigation & Trial Department, noted that the ability to bridge practice areas and locations has been especially important during the Covid-19 pandemic. "I think it has thrown into relief how good we were at coordinating across practices and markets. [It] really showed how connected we were even though we can't be together,” she told Law360.

Marc Jaffe, Global Chair of the firm’s Corporate Department, also addressed the firm’s broad capabilities, noting that one complex, highlighted transaction alone involved “attorneys from at least 10 Latham offices.”

Latham also won Law Firm of the Year recognition last year for leading litigation wins and major deals that resonated throughout the legal industry in 2019.
