Jess represents clients in high-stakes litigation in trial and appellate courts across the country. Her practice encompasses a broad range of substantive matters, including constitutional, copyright, securities, and antitrust law. She has briefed cases at every level of the judiciary, including the US Supreme Court and several state supreme courts. Jess also maintains a robust pro bono practice, with particular experience in plaintiff-side civil rights litigation.
Before joining Latham, Jess served as a law clerk for Judge Susan L. Carney of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and Judge Beryl A. Howell of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. She also served as the First Amendment Fellow at The New York Times, where she managed its freedom of information docket and successfully obtained hundreds of records, including documents that contributed to two Pulitzer Prize-winning investigations. She successfully defended The New York Times in defamation and commercial cases and counseled reporters on newsgathering and intellectual property matters.
Jess graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School, where she served as the Articles, Book Reviews, and Commentaries Chair of the Harvard Law Review. Her student note, Geofence Warrants and the Fourth Amendment, 134 Harv. L. Rev. 2508 (2021), has been cited by numerous state and federal courts, including the Fifth and Eleventh Circuits, as well as by numerous scholars and litigants, including in merits briefing before the US Supreme Court. Her note also went viral on BTS stan Twitter.
