Soren Schmidt is an associate in the Washington, D.C. office of Latham & Watkins.

Soren counsels clients in high-stakes appellate litigation and strategic decision-making. His practice spans a wide range of issues, with particular depth in constitutional law, administrative law, and statutory interpretation. He also maintains an active pro bono practice in matters involving immigration and civil rights.

Soren’s advocacy has secured favorable decisions in both state and federal courts of appeals, including two merits wins before the US Supreme Court. Soren has also served as an appointed amicus curiae, providing briefing and oral argument to the US Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

After law school, Soren clerked for Judge Cornelia T.L. Pillard of the US Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and Judge Tanya S. Chutkan of the US District Court for the District of Columbia.

Soren’s representative experience includes:

  • Oklahoma Statewide Charter School Board v. Drummond, 605 US __ (2025): Secured affirmance by equally divided vote on behalf of Oklahoma’s Attorney General in a high-profile decision confirming that Oklahoma was not required to establish the nation’s first religious charter school
  • Guam v. United States, 593 US 310 (2021): Won unanimous reversal on behalf of Guam in case raising significant and complex statutory-interpretation questions under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA)
  • Secretary of Labor v. Knight Hawk Coal LLC, et al. (D.C. Cir. 24-1293) and Secretary of Labor v. Crimson Oak Grove Resources, LLC (D.C. Cir. 24-1294): Appointed as amicus curiae to brief and argue issues regarding statutory procedures for settlement of citations under the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act
