Sonya Shaikh is an associate in the Orange County office of Latham & Watkins and a member of the Litigation & Trial Department. Ms. Shaikh advises clients on complex commercial and corporate litigation, with a focus on securities litigation.

Ms. Shaikh represents both public and private companies and their officers, directors, and special committees in connection with a variety of litigation and white collar matters, including:

  • General commercial litigation
  • Securities class actions
  • Shareholder derivative litigation
  • Mergers and acquisitions litigation
  • Fraud allegations
  • Battles for corporate control
  • Other complex, high-exposure litigation

Ms. Shaikh also maintains an active pro bono practice, advising clients on U-Visa matters, assisting with Special Immigration Juvenile Status petitions, and representing individuals under California’s Lemon Laws.

Ms. Shaikh previously served on the firm’s Pro Bono Committee and currently acts as local leader to the Women’s Lawyers Group and Parent’s Lawyers Group.

Ms. Shaikh graduated cum laude from the University of California, Irvine School of Law. While in law school, Ms. Shaikh served as the staff editor for the UC Irvine Law Review, as a teaching assistant in the Legal Research and Writing Program, and participated in UCI’s Appellate Litigation Clinic where she co-wrote a brief for the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in a copyright infringement appeal case that was ultimately reversed in part and remanded. Ms. Shaikh also served as a judicial extern to Judge Josephine L. Staton at the US District Court for the Central District of California.

Ms. Shaikh's experience includes:

  • Securing a complete defense jury verdict for NextGen Healthcare, Inc. in the first holder’s claim case to go to trial in the US in nearly 90 years. Hussein v. Razin et al. (Orange Cty. Sup. Ct. July 29, 2021)
  • Successfully represented Quality Systems, Inc. (now NextGen Healthcare) in resolving securities fraud class action in the US District Court for the Central District of California (2018)
  • Representing the directors of a public company in Delaware state court litigation involving claims for breach of fiduciary duties
  • Successfully represented Impact Biomedicines and its CEO/founder in securing a rare judgment notwithstanding the jury’s verdict following a three-week trial in a quantum meruit and fraud dispute related to an anticancer drug
  • Representing former CEO of a national bank in Section 10(b) securities class action
  • Representing technology companies and real estate investment trusts in securities class actions and stockholder litigation alleging breach of fiduciary duties in connection with mergers
  • Representing healthcare providers in response to DOJ health care fraud and antikickback scheme investigations
  • Overseeing the global trademark enforcement effort for a major client’s famous trademark – this matter involves the intersection of various areas of law, including trademark, false advertising, copyright, and the federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act
