    Ryan Whelan is an associate in the London office of Latham & Watkins.

    Ryan advises financial institutions, private equity funds, and other debt finance providers on English and multi-jurisdictional real estate finance transactions. Ryan’s experience encompasses a variety of asset classes and financing structures, including:

    • Residential and commercial development financing
    • Loan-on-loan and back-leverage transactions
    • Purpose-built student accommodation
    • Large-scale portfolio refinancings
    • Acquisition finance

    Prior to joining Latham, Ryan was an associate in the real estate finance team at another leading international law firm in London, and before that in the banking and finance team at a leading law firm in Auckland, New Zealand.

    Experience

    Ryan’s experience includes advising:

    • A lender on facilities for refinancing a multi-purpose residential and commercial development site located in Ireland*
    • A lender on a warehouse loan-on-loan facility in connection with the incremental funding and inclusion of real estate-backed loans onto the line*
    • A private equity sponsor on senior and mezzanine facilities in respect of refinancing a residential apartment development located in London*
    • A lender on facilities to finance the acquisition and capital expenditure in respect of a portfolio of purpose-built student accommodation assets located in the UK, including acting for that lender in respect of its back-leverage arrangements*
    • Stonepeak Partners LLC on facilities to finance the acquisition and capital expenditure of a portfolio of retirement villages across New Zealand*
