Nieves Bayón Fernández is an associate in the Brussels office of Latham & Watkins and a member of the firm’s Antitrust & Competition Practice.

Nieves represents clients in all areas of EU and international competition law, with specific experience in behavioral investigations, antitrust litigation before the EU Courts, Digital Markets Act (DMA) and Digital Services Act (DSA) matters, State aid, and other regulatory issues.

Having spent a year on secondment at the competition law department of a leading US technology company, Nieves regularly advises companies in the technology and digital sectors.

Prior to joining Latham, Nieves worked as a senior associate in the competition practice of another international law firm in Brussels.

Complementing her commercial work, Nieves is active in academia and with industry associations.

Nieves’ experience includes:

  • Representing Cellnex Telecom in an application for annulment of an State aid decision by the European Commission (EC) concerning the digitalization of the Spanish terrestrial television network, following the annulment of a previous decision by the Court of Justice of the EU*
  • Representing Alphabet and Google in the annulment and appeal proceedings concerning the EC decision in the Google Android case, which imposed the largest fine in the history of EU competition law (€4.343 million, reduced to €4.125 million by the General Court)*
  • Representing and advising Google in investigations and market studies in various jurisdictions*
  • Representing a client in the first third-party application for annulment of an EC DMA Decision*
  • Representing a very large online platform (VLOP) in infringement proceedings under the DSA*
  • Advising an industry association on DMA and technology regulation matters*
  • Advising a leading European marketplace on competition law and regulatory matters*
  • Representing Abengoa in an administrative investigation, a cartel settlement procedure, and related EU Court litigation in relation to the EC’s Ethanol Benchmarks case*
  • Representing several clients in nonpublic antitrust investigations*
