Karl Karg's environmental practice focuses on resolution of complex environmental matters, particularly for large, heavily regulated facilities such as power plants and industrial/manufacturing facilities. He is particularly experienced in the defense of US Department of Justice/EPA and state enforcement actions and citizen suits under the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, RCRA, CERCLA (Superfund), and a variety of other environmental statutes.

- The defense of US EPA and State Clean Water Act enforcement actions and related permit proceedings
- The defense of US EPA RCRA hazardous waste enforcement actions
- Regular compliance and permit counsel at multiple power plant facilities
- Complex contaminated site cleanups under CERCLA, RCRA, and state and authorities
- Litigation in Federal District and Appellate courts for powerplant facilities
- Site permitting for new power plant facilities
- Regular transactional support for M&A, financing, and public offerings where complex environmental issues arise
Prior to joining Latham, Karl was an Associate Regional Counsel for US EPA, Region V (Chicago), where he enforced virtually every major federal environmental law. While at the EPA, Karl worked extensively on enforcement matters against the energy, chemical, oil and gas, automotive, and manufacturing sectors.
Karl is a frequent speaker and writer on environmental topics. He is a member of the Natural Resources, Energy, and Environmental Law Section of the ABA, the Illinois State Bar Association, and the Washington D.C. Bar.
