Jonathan Coote is an associate in Latham’s Copyright, Privacy & Communications Practice. He advises on a range of complex matters with a focus on copyright, technology regulation, music, and digital media. 

Jonathan combines specialist copyright knowledge, with experience representing clients in the music industry, to areas including: 

  • UK and EU copyright law 
  • AI policy and regulation
  • Audiovisual Media Services Directive and audiovisual regulations
  • Technology and media regulation 
  • Music and entertainment licensing
  • Content-based transactions and acquisitions 

Before joining Latham, Jonathan initially studied music and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in musicology. Jonathan then trained at a leading UK firm, qualifying into and working within its intellectual property team. He has also spent time working at a top-tier London music boutique, where he represented many iconic global artists, with a particular focus on innovative digital rights exploitation.

  • A defendant on EU copyright and trade secrets law in a dispute relating to computer software* 
  • Artists in respect to copyright infringement claims and musicology assessments*

Transactions and Licensing 

  • Artists on licensing in areas such as immersive live experiences, fan apps, and video games* 
  • IP aspects of M&A and PE deals and complex licensing transactions, particularly in the tech sector*
