Bloomberg Law Documentary, Supreme Advocacy, Follows Latham Appellate Team Inside a Landmark Supreme Court Case

Supreme Advocacy: What It Takes to Argue at the Supreme Court, a new documentary by Bloomberg Law features a Latham appellate team led by Roman Martinez, Global Chair of the firm’s Supreme Court & Appellate Practice, as he prepares to argue before the Supreme Court on behalf of Ava Tharpe, a teenage student with severe epilepsy who suffered discrimination at her public school. The film provides a behind-the-scenes look at the strategy, preparation, and advocacy required to litigate at the nation’s highest court.

The case at the heart of the film, A.J.T. v. Osseo Area Schools, resulted in a unanimous Supreme Court victory making it easier for students with disabilities and their families to prove discrimination and obtain relief under federal law. After the Eighth Circuit ruled against Ava based on a uniquely strict legal standard, the Supreme Court unanimously agreed with Latham’s arguments and rejected that rule, affirming equal rights for children with disabilities under the ADA and Rehabilitation Act.

The Latham team who advocated on behalf of Ava also included Nick Rosellini, Peter Prindiville, Uriel Hinberg, and former associate Graham Ambrose.
