The LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York (LeGaL) recently honored Latham & Watkins at its 2018 Volunteer Thanksgiving & Awards Night. Virginia Tent, counsel in our New York office, oversees the team who works with LeGaL, and received special recognition for her efforts as well.

LeGaL has been at the forefront of ensuring the rights of non-biological, non-adoptive, and non-marital parents. In 2016, LeGaL was co-counsel in a landmark New York decision that broadened the definition of “parents,” and ruled that a parent who does not have a biological, adoptive, or marital tie to a child still has legal standing to seek visitation and custody. Our firm is proud to support LeGaL in its groundbreaking efforts through the amicus briefs we have submitted and in our work as co-counsel seeking legal recognition of a non-biological mother’s relationship with her child.
