Publication recognizes cutting-edge advice to industry leaders in influential cases and transactions.

Citing the firm’s leading role in market-pacing cases and transactions, Law360 has named Latham & Watkins a “Technology Group of the Year” for 2015. Particularly noted was the breadth of Latham’s advice within the technology sector, which “involves attorneys from across the firm, including its technology transactions, emerging companies and intellectual property groups” who “cover tax and transactional advice and a gamut of litigation.”

The firm’s recent litigation successes demonstrate “expertise at all business sizes” in high-stakes matters, particularly at trial. For example, Latham represented Cross Match Technologies, a company of several hundred employees, in a high-profile patent infringement complaint before an en banc Federal Circuit. The case resulted in the reversal of a precedential ruling on the patent authority of the US International Trade Commission. Max Grant, a Washington, D.C. IP litigation partner who represented Cross Match, told Law360: “To be able to deliver a result for them and see people down at their company who are keeping their jobs because of the work we did, that’s pretty satisfying.”

Law360 also noted additional litigation successes for clients, including “significant wins over the past year for industry giants,” and featured as an example of the firm’s transactional prowess the representation of Avago Technologies in its US$37 billion acquisition of Broadcom Corp., the largest semiconductor industry deal in history to date. The complex, multi-jurisdictional deal demonstrated “two major strengths of the firm's technology-related work: its broad expertise and cooperative culture,” according to Silicon Valley partner Christopher “Kit” Kaufman, who co-chairs the firm’s Semiconductor Industry Group and advised Avago in the deal.

Latham’s capabilities in the technology sector span a number of the firm’s practice and industry groups, each of which advises market-leading clients and financial institutions with insights into the economic, market and regulatory factors that are critical to business success.
