Firm Receives Children's Pro Bono Champion Award

Washington, D.C. lawyers honored for work and impact they've had on the area's most vulnerable children.
In recognition of Latham’s long-standing pro bono partnership and the impact Latham attorneys have had in the lives of Washington, D.C.’s most vulnerable children, the firm was honored by Children’s Law Center with the Children’s Pro Bono Champion Award at the organization’s annual benefit at the Kennedy Center. Children’s Law Center reaches over 5,000 children and their families each year, including 1 out of every 8 children in the District’s poorest neighborhoods. Judges, pediatricians and families turn to the organization to be the voice for children who are abused or neglected, who aren’t learning in school or who have health problems that can’t be solved by medicine alone. Children’s Law Center multiplies this impact by advocating for city-wide solutions that benefit all children.
Latham’s relationship with Children’s Law Center began many years ago, when Latham attorneys helped ensure that children in the nation’s capital would grow up in loving, stable homes by providing pro bono representation to caregivers seeking to adopt children from foster care. Latham also represents parents of children with disabilities in special education matters. As students languish in school and parents grow frustrated when their advocacy falls on deaf ears, countless Latham attorneys give a voice to these parents and their children through zealous special education advocacy, ensuring that children struggling in the classroom receive the support that they are legally entitled to. Latham also provides a voice to children caught in contentious custody disputes through custody guardian ad litem representation.
In addition to this client representation, Latham provides strategic leadership to Children’s Law Center, with partner Peter Winik serving on its board of directors and associate Elizabeth Richards being a founding member of its advisory board. Latham is also a frequent host of Children’s Law Center pro bono trainings and recently held the organization’s annual summer pro bono panel.
