Helping Incarcerated Mothers

More than 17,700 children in the UK are separated from their mothers by imprisonment, and only 5% of those children remain in their home once their mother has been sentenced. Maintaining healthy family relationships is vital for the rehabilitation and reintegration into society of women who have been incarcerated. Not Beyond Redemption is at the forefront of helping incarcerated mothers re-establish and preserve contact with their children during their sentence and after release.

Since 2023, lawyers in our London office have helped Not Beyond Redemption at HMP Bronzefield, the largest women’s prison in the UK and Europe. Many members of our Parent Lawyers Group and Women Lawyers Group were instrumental in establishing our partnership with the organization. Our work includes attending a monthly family law legal clinic at the prison and working directly with mothers in need of legal advice. We assist women who have lost access to their children to understand their legal rights, draft legal correspondence, and support Not Beyond Redemption with research as they pursue these cases in family court.

The impact of incarceration of mothers can be devastating, both for the women and their families.  That is why Not Beyond Redemption’s work is so meaningful and helps ensure a better future for everyone involved. I am proud and honored to collaborate with Not Beyond Redemption in this way.

“Not Beyond Redemption gave me hope when all hope was lost,” said a mother who receives support from the organization. “They have gone above and beyond for me and my son and have successfully provided me with an update on my son’s well-being. I will forever be eternally grateful for their services.”

Through the clinic, our lawyers help ensure that the mothers at HMP Bronzefield understand their rights as well as the reintegration process for when they are released. “The impact of incarceration of mothers can be devastating, both for the women and their children. That is why Not Beyond Redemption’s work is so meaningful and helps ensure a better future for everyone involved,” said Nell Perks, a partner in our London office who leads the Latham team. “I am proud and honored to collaborate with Not Beyond Redemption in this way.”
