In 2013, Latham leaders recognized the unique challenges and opportunities faced by female associates, so they created the Women’s Leadership Academy. The annual academy — jointly run by the firm’s Diversity Leadership, Women Enriching Business, and Training & Career Enhancement Committees — offers tailored professional development to senior associates. Panels and discussions cover communication skills, cross-selling, and business development, among other topics, and networking events facilitate mentoring and community-building. Participants leave the academy with strategic action plans, strong connections and friendships, and a deeper understanding of the firm’s commitment to the retention and promotion of its women lawyers.
“The Women’s Leadership Academy for senior associates is one of my favorite annual training events,” says Cathy Birkeland, Managing Partner of Latham’s Chicago Office, who has participated as a faculty member in every academy since its inception. “There’s a tremendous sense of energy and drive among participants every spring, and I relish the opportunity to help associates progress and develop at this crucial stage in their careers.”
