Michael Huggins litigates and advises clients across industries on complex and high-value commercial matters, focusing on insurance counseling and recovery.

Mr. Huggins’ insurance experience spans a broad range of commercial lines of insurance, including:

  • Professional liability insurance policies

Mr. Huggins represents policyholders in federal and state trial and appellate courts in some of the most highly visible and largest insurance claims throughout the country. He has substantial experience assisting policyholders with responding to cyber events and assisting businesses with seeking coverage for losses due to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Mr. Huggins maintains a robust pro bono practice, advising clients regarding a wide range of legal needs, including in immigration, veterans benefits, and civil rights matters. He currently serves as court-appointed pro bono counsel in an incarcerated individual’s federal civil rights action against California prison officials concerning their deliberate indifference to his serious medical needs.

Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Huggins served as a Deputy Attorney General for the State of California. While in law school, he served as a judicial extern in the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Mr. Huggins’ representative experience includes:

  • Developing response and insurance recovery strategy for businesses affected by cyberattacks, including, for example, ransomware attacks, fraudulent funds transfers, and data breaches
  • Developing case strategy and litigated high-value claims by policyholders against insurers for business interruption and extra expense incurred as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, in state and federal trial and appellate courts
  • Assisting policyholder in obtaining insurance coverage for the company and its directors and officers in connection with claims for defamation and alleged antitrust violations
  • Advising policyholders on risk assessments and policy renewals for suite of commercial insurance policies
  • Through pre-litigation efforts, securing reimbursement from vendor’s insurers for losses sustained by commercial property owner due to vendor’s construction error
  • Negotiating with public trust and litigated against insurer to successfully recover losses sustained by wineries as a result of wildfires
  • Securing judgment in federal court for insurance proceeds to cover the investigation, defense, and cleanup of environmental pollution liability alleged against policyholder
