Malorie Medellin is an associate in the Chicago office of Latham & Watkins and a member of the Environment, Land & Resources Practice.

Ms. Medellin represents clients in environmental litigation and counsels on environmental transactional matters, including ESG disclosures and sustainability reporting. She has litigated environmental cases in both state and federal court under CERCLA and the Clean Air Act. She advises financial clients on transactional matters involving environmental, energy, and natural resource issues, including clean energy permitting issues and analysis of greenhouse gas reporting requirements, nature conservation regulations, and ESG disclosures. 

In addition to her environmental practice, Ms. Medellin has experience in counseling and litigating policyholder-side insurance matters involving both environmental and commercial coverage policies.

Ms. Medellin also has worked on cases involving domestic violence, asylum, and conditions of confinement under the Eighth Amendment. She serves as a certified mediator through the Center on Conflict Resolution.

Ms. Medellin’s experience includes advising:

  • A diesel engine manufacturer in mobile source emissions federal enforcement litigation under the Clean Air Act 
  • A utility company in CERCLA cost-recovery litigation and federal trial involving PAH contamination 
  • A land planning and development firm on sustainability and ESG reporting standards
  • An international client on nature conservation and greenhouse gas reporting requirements and international standards
  • A renewable energy company on multiple wind farm projects and related federal permitting requirements
  • An investment management company on environmental liabilities and related insurance coverage in connection with a major power plant construction project in Ohio
  • A multinational private equity firm on environmental and asbestos related insurance liabilities and coverage in acquisition of ship repair and fabrication business
  • A multinational private equity firm on asbestos related insurance coverage and liabilities in acquisition of international pump and valve manufacturer

Leadership

Ms. Medellin is a former member of the firm’s Pro Bono Committee and TACE Committee.

Prior to joining Latham, Ms. Medellin participated in the investigation and litigation of numerous wrongful convictions, both as an undergraduate and graduate student at Northwestern University. As a freelance journalist, she has been published in multiple magazines, including Builder, Developer, Green Builder, and Chicago Lawyer.

She currently serves on the Board of Directors for Uptown People’s Law Center and The Caring Place, a domestic violence shelter. She is a member of the Chicago Bar Association and serves on the CBA Judicial Evaluation Committee.
