New York and Washington, D.C.-based Team Honored for Pro Bono Work

October 20, 2023
Partner Michèle Penzer and associates Carolina Bernal, Brooke Padgett, and Sloan Ungerman were recognized for their dedication to Human Rights First and commitment to pro bono.

Human Rights First, a nonprofit that works to promote respect for human rights and the rule of law, recognized partner Michèle Penzer and associates Carolina Bernal, Brooke Padgett, and Sloan Ungerman with its Pro Bono Star Award. This award is given to those participating in the nonprofit’s pro bono program who have shown “extraordinary commitment to representing and protecting asylum seekers.”

The Latham team has been assisting a Human Rights First client with her asylum application. This client arrived in the United States after fleeing Afghanistan during the days of the Taliban takeover of Kabul, and although she was able to evacuate successfully, she was separated from her husband and children. She later learned that her husband was killed by an ISIS-K bombing at the Kabul airport.
