Healthcare & Life Sciences Partner Recognized as Business of Pride Honoree

Stuart Kurlander, a member of Latham’s Healthcare & Life Sciences Practice and Global Co-Chair of the Israel Practice, has been recognized by the Washington Business Journal (WBJ) as a 2019 Business of Pride honoree. The award highlights a select group of business and nonprofit leaders in Washington, D.C. who are “advancing LGBTQ leadership and equality” in the workplace while blazing a trail for diversity and inclusion.

In a profile article, the WBJ recognized Kurlander’s commitment to inclusion, noting that he meets with all LGBTQ lawyers when they join the Washington, D.C. office to talk about their careers and ensure they have a sense of community within the firm. In addition to mentoring, Kurlander encourages colleagues to serve as allies and advocates for the LGBTQ community and those who need help most through pro bono work. He and many others at Latham have “done a lot of work for Human Rights Campaign, Williams Institute, Sage, and Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund,” Kurlander told the WBJ.

Outside the office, Kurlander strives to support the intersection of the Jewish and LGBTQ communities in Washington through several organizations. He served as the first openly gay president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, and founded the Kurlander Program on Gay and Lesbian Outreach and Engagement (GLOE) at the District of Columbia Jewish Community Center, which works to engage LGBTQ Jews and their allies.

As for what encourages him about the climate for LGBTQ equality, Kurlander told the WBJ, “I am fortunate to work at a law firm where I can be open and feel included. My firm is leading the way in inclusivity training so that diversity and a collaborative work environment go hand in hand.”
