Profile

Michael Green is a counsel in the London office of Latham & Watkins and a member of the firm’s Environment, Land & Resources Department. His practice focuses on a range of Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) matters, particularly in the context of transactional work. He has experience in environmental litigation and the management of environmental risks.

Mr. Green is consistently recognized by Chambers UK and clients say that he pays “great attention to detail, and is focused and very dependable,” with another noting “I trust his judgement hugely.” Mr. Green is named a Recommended Global Leader for Environment by Who’s Who Legal 2019. Experience

Mr. Green’s representative transactions include advising:

  • Onex Corporation on the EHS aspects of its €3.75 billion acquisition of SIG Combibloc Group AG, the second largest provider of aseptic carton packaging globally 
  • SABIC on the acquisition of Huntsman’s UK petrochemicals business and providing ongoing support to SABIC across a range of EHS issues
  • Global financial institutions on a range of EHS regulatory issues, particularly complaints made under the OECD Multinational Guidelines, the transboundary movement of waste, and lender liability concerns
  • A leading chemical company on its complex infrastructure and energy contractual arrangements, including devising a litigation strategy to exit those arrangements
  • On the mitigation of potential fines under the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme as a result of under-reporting allowances
  • A consortium, including Royal Vopak, Shell, and Greenergy, in relation to its joint venture and acquisition of the former Coryton refinery*
  • Trafigura Limited and Trafigura Beheer B.V. on the high-profile personal injury claim by more than 30,000 claimants from the Ivory Coast – one of the largest pieces of environmental litigation ever brought before a UK court*
  • WSP Environmental on the first completed Active Transfer deal in the UK. This ground-breaking scheme involved liability transfer, whereby WSP Environmental took on the obligation to remediate the site being sold, thereby enabling the sale and redevelopment of a 500,000 sq ft former Kodak facility* 
  • GE on its contribution to the consortium that acquired London City Airport, working closely with the GE risk teams to satisfy their internal requirements and the risks for the consortium* 
  • Sime Darby London Limited in connection with the environmental management of certain land holdings and redevelopment of a significant part*
