Collaborating With Strategic Advocacy for Human Rights

Since 2008, Strategic Advocacy for Human Rights (SAHR) has advocated for survivors of gender-based violence, focusing on access to justice in the Global South and East. The organization is committed to addressing deficiencies in legal frameworks and policy, which sometimes fail to protect survivors or address overlapping forms of discrimination. Their work includes representing victims of harassment and violence, working to repeal discriminatory laws, and focusing on mentorship to strengthen and expand advocacy.

"Our lawyers have appreciated the opportunities to work with SAHR on solutions-oriented collaborations that will lead to improved policies and practices for people around the globe."

Ashley Robson, Associate, Singapore

Our Asia offices provided cross-border research to produce guides and comparative reports for SAHR. With Latham’s assistance, SAHR submitted a report to the United Nations highlighting the extent to which legislation in select countries aligns with the UN Model Law on Rape. This report serves as a tool for implementing international standards regarding rape, and recognizes rape as a human rights violation. As a result of this research, the UN Human Rights Committee identified concerns and suggested actions for countries to improve their human rights practices in this area.

Our lawyers reviewed and prepared a report on legislation and policies in various countries, including Australia, Egypt, Lebanon, and South Africa to assess the extent to which they address gender-based stalking. In addition to analyzing anti-stalking laws, the report contained a summary of best practices for protecting targets of stalking and various provisions of law contribute to improved protection from or prosecution of the crime.
