Advancing International Development

Latham is well positioned to assist organizations committed to improving the lives of people in communities affected by unrest, natural disasters, limited investment, and inadequate infrastructure. For many years, we have partnered with pro bono clearinghouses like Advocates for International Development (A4ID), which connects law firms with global organizations dedicated to alleviating poverty, and TrustLaw, which addresses the legal needs of organizations at the forefront of social and environmental change. In 2025, we organized both in-person and virtual legal clinics in London designed to support A4ID’s development partners with their operational and legal challenges. Through A4ID, the firm has also assisted BRAC UK, a charity focused on education, healthcare, microfinance, and women’s rights in countries including Nepal, Tanzania, and Bangladesh. We advised BRAC on media licensing requirements, data privacy, and lease arrangements.

We also provide an array of corporate support to clients such as GOAL, an international humanitarian agency dedicated to alleviating the needs of the most vulnerable communities through disaster relief and addressing food insecurity; Deutsche Welthungerhilfe, a nonprofit based in Germany committed to combating global hunger and poverty; and Bibliotecas Sin Fronteras España, the Spanish affiliate of Bibliothèques Sans Frontières, an international NGO dedicated to expanding equitable access to knowledge, culture, education, and reliable information.

"International development plays a critical role in empowering communities and expanding access to justice across borders."

Additionally, Latham maintains longstanding partnerships with clients like Save the Children, which operates in over 100 countries to promote child health, education, protection, and nutrition through long-term development programs. Latham lawyers in the UK, Hong Kong, and the United Arab Emirates support Save the Children on a range of issues, including medical regulatory, employment, and procurement advice, as well as advice on commercial contracts. Further, we have represented CARE for over a decade as they have navigated sanctions regulations to provide essential relief to communities living through war.

Another longtime partner is the International Senior Lawyers Project (ISLP), which provides legal assistance to countries transitioning to democracy and market-based economies. We have collaborated with ISLP on a range of initiatives, including advising on critical mineral law reform as well as facilitating training in Zambia that covered significant aspects of international arbitration, such as drafting clauses and enforcing awards. We delivered a similar training for lawyers from Kenya’s Office of the Attorney General in Nairobi, building capacity in critically important areas of the law. We were thrilled that Latham partner Clement Fondufe received ISLP’s Global Impact Volunteer Award as they celebrated their 20th anniversary.
