Leading Antitrust Enforcer Joins Latham & Watkins in San Francisco

December 13, 2010

Latham & Watkins LLP1 is pleased to announce that Niall E. Lynch will join the firm’s Litigation Department at the start of the new year as a partner in the San Francisco office.  Lynch is a highly respected and experienced antitrust attorney who joins Latham & Watkins from the San Francisco Field Office of the US Department of Justice (“DOJ”), where he served as Assistant Chief of the Antitrust Division and was one of the leading attorneys in the US government’s cartel enforcement program.

Lynch brings exceptional government enforcement experience to Latham’s fast-growing global cartel practice.  He is an experienced trial attorney, acting as lead attorney in several of the Antitrust Division’s largest and most successful global cartel prosecutions, including enforcement actions for price fixing in the DRAM semiconductor market for which he won the Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award.  More recently, he led the Antitrust Division’s liquid crystal display price-fixing investigation. Lynch’s strong knowledge of US government enforcement considerations and practices, particularly as applied in cross-border investigations, the widely successful Corporate Amnesty Program, and coordination efforts with antitrust enforcement agencies around the world, adds an invaluable strategic perspective to Latham’s Global Antitrust and Competition Practice Group, which has approximately 150 experienced antitrust attorneys serving clients wherever necessary around the world.

Peter Wald, Global Chair of the firm’s Litigation Department and a partner in the San Francisco office, said: “Niall brings substantial additional expertise to our Antitrust and Competition Practice Group, which is already regarded as one of the industry’s leading practices in both the civil and criminal arenas.”

“We are excited to attract Niall to our team; he brings strategic capabilities and experience that expand our platform and the best-in-class counsel we provide to our clients,” added Michael Egge, Global Co-Chair of the firm’s Antitrust and Competition Practice Group and a partner in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. “We have been blessed with incredible growth and success in our antitrust practice, particularly in the cartel and merger spaces.  Adding an established star like Niall enhances the trajectory of our global practice.  We are so pleased to welcome him to our team.”

“Niall’s strong trial experience, leadership skills and judgment make him a great addition to the team. In particular, our robust cartel enforcement practice representing companies that are the target of price fixing investigations will benefit from his expertise,” said Christopher Yates, Global Co-Chair of the firm’s Antitrust and Competition Practice Group and a partner in the firm’s San Francisco office.

Lynch said: “Latham has an outstanding global antitrust and competition practice, with an elite group of lawyers located in offices around the world.  I am very excited to join Latham and was attracted by the opportunity to continue the robust growth of the firm’s global antitrust and competition practice, particularly in the area of international price-fixing investigations.”

Lynch received his JD with Honors (cum laude) in 1991 from Hastings College of the Law and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with Honors in 1986 with a degree in Political Science. After graduating from law school, he clerked for the Honorable Edward J. Schwartz of the US District Court for the Southern District of California.
