Latham Recognized for Investigations Prowess at Global Investigations Review Awards

November 15, 2021
Global Investigations Review
Firm honored among the most impressive investigations practices of the year.

Latham’s White Collar Defense & Investigations Practice was honored as a finalist for Global Investigations Review’s (GIR) Most Impressive Investigations Practice of the Year at the publication’s annual awards program, which celebrate the investigations lawyers and practices who “impressed most” in the past year.

In particular, GIR commended the firm for securing “three notable successes over the past year, spanning cases over allegations of trade secret theft and FCPA violations” for companies including Taiwanese chipmaker United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), South Korean multinational LG Energy Solution, and Russian telecoms company Mobile TeleSystems.

GIR lauded Latham’s defense of UMC after it was charged by the DOJ with theft of trade secrets, economic espionage, and conspiracy, in a case the US Attorney General said could be worth tens of billions of dollars. The Latham team slowly dismantled the government’s case and guided the chipmaker to a single count of possession of a stolen trade secret and a US$60 million settlement. GIR honored another impressive victory of 2021, when the firm secured the largest public trade secrets settlement ever, a US$1.8 billion settlement for LG Energy Solution in a dispute over electric vehicle batteries before the ITC. The resolution was praised by the White House as “a win for American workers and the American auto industry.” GIR also recognized Latham’s victory on behalf of Russian telecom leader Mobile TeleSystems when the firm fended off a lawsuit from investors claiming the company misled them over its efforts in a foreign bribery investigation.

In addition, Latham was recognized by GIR as one of the top ten global investigations practices of 2021, a ranking of firms with the strongest international investigations practices, which measures firms’ institutional strengths based on a number of factors and considering their work over the past two years.

The honors reflect excellent results achieved by the firm’s litigators throughout the US and around the world. The team features career defense advocates and former high-ranking government lawyers from Republican and Democratic administrations, who are experienced in every substantive area and whose courtroom and investigation skills are current and tested.
