Latham & Watkins Promotes Eight Counsel to Partnership

The group of new partners possesses deep experience across diverse markets and areas of practice.

Latham & Watkins LLP1 is pleased to announce that eight counsel at the firm have been elected to the partnership. The promotions today follow the recent election of 25 associates to the partnership, effective January 1, 2016. 

The new partners span the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, and they advise clients in transactional and litigation areas of law. 

“These lawyers have demonstrated deep subject area knowledge and market insights, as well as the teamwork and commitment to client service that are hallmarks of our firm,” said Bill Voge, Chair and Managing Partner of Latham & Watkins. “Their skills and experience reflect Latham’s strengths across practice areas and markets, and we are confident they will continue to contribute to the success of our firm and our clients.” 

The new partners include:

M. Ryan Benedict — Milan 

Benedict is a member of the firm’s Capital Markets Practice. He represents issuers and underwriters in debt and equity capital markets transactions, tender offers and liability management transactions, with a focus on transactions in Italy and southern and eastern Europe. In particular, he has advised on a significant number of high yield bond transactions, initial public offerings and rights offerings. Benedict received his JD from the Boston University School of Law. 

Marcello Bragliani — Milan 

Bragliani is a member of the firm’s Banking Practice. His practice focuses on leveraged finance and general banking matters, in which he has represented both lender and borrower-side clients. He also has notable experience in restructuring and debt capital markets, and he has advised on complex financings in the automotive, retail and shipping industries, among others. Bragliani received his law degree from the University of Ferrara, a postgraduate law degree from the Sole 24 Ore Business School, and an LLM from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Benjamin R. Carale — Hong Kong 

A member of the firm’s Capital Markets Practice, Carale is dual-qualified in New York and in the Philippines, and he is a registered foreign lawyer in Hong Kong. He advises on corporate finance and securities transactions, including high yield debt offerings, IPOs and liability management transactions, as well as cross-border M&A transactions. He also has helped the firm develop a successful Philippines practice spanning capital markets, project finance, M&A and arbitration and enforcement matters. Carale received his LLB from the University of the Philippines and an LLM from the New York University School of Law. 

Kevin Andrew Chambers — Washington, D.C. 

Chambers is a member of the firm’s White Collar Defense & Investigations Practice. He represents clients in a range of white collar, securities and professional liability matters, including litigation and internal investigations. Prior to joining Latham, Chambers served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Columbia from 2010–2014, where he was the lead prosecutor in more than 60 trials. Chambers received his JD from Yale Law School and served as a judicial clerk for Judge Harry T. Edwards of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. 

Omar M. Elsayed — Riyadh 

Elsayed is a member of the firm’s Mergers & Acquisitions Practice with nearly 15 years’ experience practicing in Saudi Arabia. His practice focuses on public and private M&A transactions, inbound and outbound investments, project development and joint ventures. In addition, he advises on capital markets transactions and represents boards of directors in internal investigations and corporate governance matters. Elsayed received his LLB from Medina University in Saudi Arabia and an LLM from the University of Manchester. 

Sungjin Kang — Hong Kong 

Kang is a member of the firm’s Project Development & Finance Practice who advises both sponsors and lenders on cross-border project finance and energy-related M&A transactions, with a focus on transactions in Asia and the Middle East. His experience in these transactions, particularly those involving Korean sponsors and lenders, combined with his native Korean fluency, has made him a valuable resource to the firm and its clients in Asia. He received his JD from the Columbia University School of Law. 

Christopher Lester — Dubai 

Lester is a member of the firm’s Mergers & Acquisitions Practice. His practice focuses on complex M&A transactions, joint ventures and strategic alliances in the financial services, metals and mining, industrial and aerospace and defense sectors. He routinely represents government-related entities in the Middle East on outbound and regional investments. Lester received his LLB from Monash University. 

Veronica Relea — New York 

Relea is a member of the firm's Project Development & Finance Practice. She represents commercial and investment banks, sponsors, developers and private equity firms in connection with the development, construction, operation and financing of domestic and cross-border energy, oil & gas and infrastructure projects. She also has extensive experience in leveraged finance transactions, including acquisition financings, asset-based facilities, private equity transactions, mezzanine financings and cross-border financings. Relea has advised on numerous transactions in Latin America, where her language skills in Spanish and Portuguese have been a valuable asset. She received her JD from Harvard Law School.
