Latham & Watkins is pleased to announce that Stephen Kensell will join the London office as a partner in the Finance Department. Kensell is one of the market’s foremost banking practitioners with more than 20 years’ experience advising top financial institutions on a broad range of complex financing matters.
“We are delighted to welcome Stephen to the firm,” said Jay Sadanandan, London Office Managing Partner of Latham & Watkins. “We have firmly established ourselves among the elite firms for high-end leveraged and acquisition financing work in London, thanks to our unique ability to switch between all forms of loan, bond and hybrid capital structures across multiple jurisdictions. Stephen’s wide-ranging experience at the very top of the profession will further enhance our platform in the City and globally.”
Kensell has an outstanding reputation as one of the leading creditor-side lawyers in the London bank finance market. He has vast experience advising clients on a variety of event-driven financings, with particular expertise in leveraged, investment grade M&A and IPO related finance. Over the years, his work on many international and landmark transactions has placed him at the forefront of developments in the banking community.
Christopher Kandel, Global Co-chair of the Banking Practice, said: “Latham is one of the few firms able to advise lenders, sponsors and borrowers on all types of finance transactions. Stephen’s expertise is highly complementary to the firm’s existing finance capabilities. As well as bringing a top-notch reputation in leveraged finance, his vast industry knowledge and technical acumen across a range of investment grade corporate and acquisition finance products will add greater depth to our practice.”
“Stephen will be a great addition to our team and a tremendous asset to our clients. He has a distinguished track record and his arrival will significantly enhance our existing bank-side capability,” added Richard Trobman, London-based partner and member of the firm’s Executive Committee.
Kensell will join the firm from Allen & Overy’s London office. He received his bachelor of arts degree in 1987 and his bachelor of law in 1990 from Macquarie University in Sydney.
Kensell is the latest high-profile finance hire the firm has announced in London recently, following restructuring partner Simon Baskerville, real estate finance partners Jeremy Trinder and Quentin Gwyer, and financial regulatory partner Rob Moulton.
