Latham & Watkins is pleased to announce that Simon Baskerville will join the firm as a partner in the Finance Department. Over the years, he has developed a formidable reputation in the UK for advising on a broad range of complex restructuring and insolvency matters.

Baskerville has more than 17 years’ experience representing debtors, administrators/administrative receivers and creditors in UK based restructurings and UK aspects of international restructurings. In particular, he regularly advises alternative asset managers active in special situations and other debt investments. He also has significant experience in a wider range of corporate transactions, including public and private M&A and capital fundraisings.

A leading figure in the UK restructuring community, Baskerville is well known for playing a key role in a number of high-profile matters in which he represented prominent asset managers, hedge funds and bondholders.

“We look forward to welcoming Simon to the firm. His experience and knowledge of this important sector significantly enhances our existing finance capabilities in London,” commented Jay Sadanandan, London Office Managing Partner. “Our finance and restructuring practice has established an excellent track record advising on some of the market’s most innovative and challenging transactions. Simon’s problem-solving skills, commercial acumen and top-tier legal credentials will add further breadth and depth to our restructuring practice, and his arrival will also enable us to continue developing our representation of alternative asset managers across the broad spectrum of private debt finance.”

John Houghton, global Co-chair of the Restructuring, Insolvency & Workouts Practice, added: “Simon has a fantastic reputation in the market that will enhance our global restructuring practice. He also brings extensive experience in the alternative asset manager sector, which we expect to play an important role in the special situations which will undoubtedly arise in this uncertain post-Brexit market. We are delighted to welcome him to the firm”

“Expanding our alternative asset manager coverage in London is a key strategic priority for us,” said Dominic Newcomb, Vice Chair of Latham’s Global Finance Department. “We see clients in this sector playing an increasingly significant role in our core leveraged finance work, and taking a growing share of primary lending transactions. Simon is a market leader with deep expertise and industry knowledge, and his arrival will help us continue to develop our client base across the European direct lending and special situations lending practices, as well as in specialist loan markets where funds are active such as real estate and infrastructure finance.”

Baskerville will join Latham & Watkins from Ashurst in London. He graduated from the University of Southampton with an LLB in 1997 before taking his LPC at Oxford Institute of Legal Practice in 1998.
