Latham & Watkins was cited as having the leading Emerging Companies practice in California by the Daily Journal in its annual coverage of “Top California Law Firms.” The practice, led by global co-chairs Alan Mendelson and Patrick Pohlen, was profiled in the report as having both the Silicon Valley expertise and global reach to handle clients from venture-backed startups to Fortune 100 companies.

Mendelson and Pohlen supervise a large practice group, based principally in the key technology markets of Silicon Valley and Southern California. The practice's combination of strengths, representing public and private companies as well as venture capital firms and underwriters, “sets it apart,” the legal newspaper reported. Mendelson noted: "Of the 46 venture-backed initial public offerings last year, we were involved in 13 of those, or roughly 25 percent of all deals done in the United States.”

Among the recent, notable matters called out in the report are the firm’s representations of biofuel and pharmaceutical company Codexis Inc. and digital media company Demand Media, Inc. in their initial public offerings, and advising OncoMed Pharmaceuticals Inc. in a strategic alliance with Germany’s Bayer Schering Pharma AG to discover and commercialize anti-cancer stem cell therapeutics.
