In September 2018, a group of Latham partners — Thomas Fox, Rob Malionek, JP Poitras, Bob Steinberg, and Sven Volcker — competed in the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa, to raise money for longtime pro bono client Ubuntu Pathways. This money will be used to build a state-of-the-art, high-quality primary school in the heart of Zwide Township, Port Elizabeth, one of the poorest townships in South Africa.

Latham has partnered with, and offered pro bono support to, Ubuntu Pathways since its founding in 1999. Ubuntu’s philosophy is that a child’s birthplace should not determine her future, and that access to world-class healthcare and education is a right, not a privilege. Ubuntu plans to break ground in early 2019 and the school will help establish a truly pioneering model for education in South Africa.
