New York Office Inspires Love of Reading in Local Kids

Latham partners with Read Ahead to help elementary school students in NYC.

15 June 2016

Once a week, several Latham lawyers and professional staff members spend their lunch hour at PS 116, a public elementary school about 20 blocks from our New York office. There, they read with and mentor young children, fostering a lifelong love of reading, improving the students’ confidence and offering guidance for success in school and in life.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Read Ahead pairs volunteer adult professionals with elementary school students in New York City for one-on-one reading-based mentoring sessions over lunch. More than 150 Latham lawyers and staff have volunteered with Read Ahead since 2004.

“I tell my ‘reading buddy,’ Jaiden, that I was just like him,” says New York partner and longtime Read Ahead volunteer John Giouroukakis. “My parents were immigrants. I went to public school in New York, and I got to where I am by developing a love of reading.”
