Black History Month: #BlackExcellence #BlackWomenWhoLead in STEAM

In celebration of European Black History Month, the webinar will highlight Black women of excellence within the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths (STEAM).


Latham & Watkins' Black Lawyers Group is pleased to invite you to a webinar on Wednesday, October 07, 2020, in celebration of European Black History Month. The webinar will highlight Black women of excellence within the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths (STEAM).

The conversation will be followed by a Q&A discussion with our panelists featuring questions from the audience.


The webinar will feature the following panelists, all proven leaders in their relevant STEAM fields, who will provide an extensive insight into their respective experiences.

  • Afua Hirsch, Writer, Broadcaster, and former Barrister: Afua is a former barrister, journalist, and documentary maker. She regularly writes, reports, and speaks on international current affairs, and has published two bestselling books: (1) "Brit(ish): On Race, Identity and Belonging" (the winner of the Royal Society of Literature Jerwood Prize) and (2) "Equal To Everything" profiling the many facets of the UK Supreme Court.
  • June Sarpong, OBE, Broadcaster, Writer, and Campaigner: With a remarkable breadth of presenting credits, from T4 to talk shows, game shows to documentaries, June combines her broadcasting work with social and political causes. A Prince’s Trust ambassador, she is the co-founder of the Women: Inspiration & Enterprise Network.
  • Dr. Maggie Aderin-Pocock, Space Scientist and Science Educator: Maggie is a scientist and broadcaster referred to as the BBC’s "face of space." She is the presenter of the astronomical institution "The Sky at Night," has fronted a number of space documentaries, and regularly appears on science and non-science programs.
  • Ebele Okobi, Public Policy Director Africa, Middle East and Turkey, Facebook: Prior to joining Facebook, Ebele was Global Head of Human Rights at Yahoo and in the management development program in Nike’s EMEA headquarters. She is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a board member of Junior Achievement Africa, Trustee of Care International UK, and has just joined the Board of Trustees of The Young Vic.
