Dr. Philipp Schmalenbach is an associate in Latham and Watkins' Hamburg office and a member of the Restructuring & Special Situations Practice. Mr. Schmalenbach advises German and international creditors, investors, companies, management, shareholders, and insolvency administrators in connection with:
- Financial restructurings (in-court and out-of-court)
- Operational corporate restructurings
- Acquisition of distressed companies, restructuring, rescue financing, or refinancing transactions
Dr. Schmalenbach studied law at the Universities of Heidelberg and Münster focusing on civil contract law. Subsequently, he worked for a year as a research assistant in the corporate/M&A department of an international corporate law firm and obtained his doctorate at the Humboldt University in Berlin with a thesis relating to capital markets law.
During his legal clerkship, Mr. Schmalenbach completed parts of his practical legal training at a corporate law firm in the restructuring and insolvency department, the German embassy in Tokyo, and a digital bank in Berlin.
