Luis López is an associate in the Madrid office of Latham & Watkins and a member of the Corporate Department. Mr. López primarily handles private equity deals in the real estate sector, debt portfolio trades, and debt special situations. Mr. López has extensive experience advising private equity funds, banks, and real estate properties’ management platforms.

Mr. López is experienced in acquisitions and disposals of single assets and portfolios in all asset classes, sale and leaseback transactions, and operating and financial leases. This includes acquiring real estate loan portfolios and devising innovative strategies to acquire interests in distressed portfolios, as well as developing approaches to realize more value from existing portfolios and portfolio re-positioning, whether consensual or through a formal process. He also has outstanding experience in advising on urban planning law.

Mr. López’s experience includes advising:

  • Cerberus in the acquisition of a portfolio of consumer  and SMEs non-performing loans secured by c. 2,300 real estate assets from Unicaja Banco
  • Apollo on the establishment of a hotel platform and subsequent acquisition of Hotel complex “Sol House Costa del Sol” from Melia Hotels International
  • Partners Group on the joint venture with Aristeas to create a platform of logistic real estate assets
  • Cerberus in the acquisition and financing of a portfolio of NPLs acquired to Kutxabank and CajaSur
  • Tristan Capital on the joint venture with Acciona Inmobiliaria for the development of an office complex in Barcelona
  • Apollo, acting through Apollo European Principal Finance Fund II, on:
    • The acquisition of 85% of Banco Santander's debt recovery and property management platform in Spain*
    • The financings granted to Apollo in the context of the transaction*
  • WP Carey Spanish subsidiary Inversiones Holmes on the acquisition of the portfolio of 70 properties (including some prominent buildings) from the Andalusian regional government*
  • Apollo, as successful bidder, on the bidding process of Project Whale, consisting on the sale by Banco Popular of an NPL and PL portfolios backed by hospitality assets*
  • DK Partners on the acquisition of a portfolio of non-performing property loans secured with residential and land units from Sareb*
  • The joint venture formed by TIAA, the US pension fund, and Neinver, a Spanish real estate developer, on:
    • The acquisition of a portfolio of six retail outlet centers throughout Europe, located in Madrid, Spain (Las Rozas, San Sebastián de los Reyes, and Getafe), Italy (Vicolungo, close to Milan and Castel Guelfo near Bologna), and Poland (Factory Poznan)*
    • The financing of such acquisition*
