For the ninth consecutive year, Vice Chair of Latham’s Litigation & Trial Department Doug Lumish has been named among the Top Intellectual Property Lawyers in California by the Daily Journal, which honors high-prolife litigators with notable accomplishments during the past year.

In his published profile, Lumish was recognized for his recent work defending Arista Networks against rival Cisco Systems in one of the biggest IP cases globally in the past year. Lumish and the Latham team quickly strung together a series of decisive wins, chief among these was obtaining noninfringement rulings from the US Customs and Border Patrol and the US International Trade Commission that cleared the way for Arista to import its revolutionary Ethernet switches.

Also cited was his successful representation of WhatsApp, a popular cross platform messaging service owned by Facebook, in patent litigation against TriPlay, an Israeli-based company claiming to own the concept of using a server to translate messages from one format to another during transmission. Lumish helped secured victory for WhatsApp, invalidating the two patents in suit and winning a motion to dismiss.

The piece also outlined the critical influences that drew Lumish to IP litigation and his keys to victory.
