White Collar Defense & Investigations Partner Named Among Top Healthcare Lawyers in California

Daily Journal

December 06, 2019

White Collar Defense & Investigations and San Diego partner Katherine Lauer has been named a Top Healthcare Lawyer by the Daily Journal, California’s legal newspaper of record. This is the first year the Daily Journal has recognized California’s leading healthcare lawyers and less than 25 attorneys made the list. Lauer was honored for her “expertise… in defending clients in the qui tam and government healthcare fraud arena.”

In her published profile, Lauer discussed her ongoing defense of Sutter Health and Palo Alto Medical Foundation, in a whistleblower matter in which the government has intervened, and her recent Eleventh Circuit victory on behalf of HCA, the nation’s largest healthcare system. On her win for HCA, Lauer noted, “It’s one of the first cases where a federal court of appeal has opined that a fair market value payment does not constitute improper remuneration under the Anti-Kickback Statute. That’s significant.”

Lauer is one of the foremost healthcare lawyers in the country and has defended dozens of civil and criminal government healthcare fraud investigations and qui tam cases over the past three decades in some of the country’s most high-profile matters. She also provides ongoing healthcare regulatory and compliance advice, and has extensive experience in matters involving the federal Anti-Kickback Statute, the Stark Laws and the federal False Claims Act, as well as other reimbursement issues.
