Carlos Betoret is an associate in the Madrid office of Latham & Watkins and a member of the firm’s Global Antitrust & Competition Practice. His practice focuses on all aspects concerning EU and Spanish competition law, including.

Mr. Betoret represents international companies before the European Commission and the Spanish Competition authority in merger control, cartel, abuse of dominance, horizontal and vertical agreements, and state aid proceedings.

Prior to joining Latham, Mr. Betoret worked in a major international law firm, acting for numerous big Spanish and International corporations of different industries, such as healthcare, financial institutions, waste management, and infrastructures, among others.

Mr. Betoret has also represented his clients before the Spanish courts, including, regional courts, the High Court, and the Supreme Court.

 

Experience

Mr. Betoret's recent signature experience includes advising:

  • HOCHTIEF AG on (i) the multijurisdictional merger control aspects of its €18bn takeover of Abertis Infraestructuras (in October 2017); and (ii) the joint acquisition of Abertis, pursuant to the agreement reached between ACS, Hochtief, and Atlantia*
  • Bakery Iberian Investment in the acquisition of Panrico*
  • Barclays Bank in the merger control aspects of the transfer of the Spanish and Portuguese Barclaycard (credit card) business held by Barclays Bank Plc through its Spanish and Portuguese branches to Bancopopular-e*
  • Barclays Bank on the sale of its retail and wealth and part of its corporate banking businesses in Portugal to Bankinter and on the sale of its insurance business in Portugal to Bankinter’s assurance subsidiary*
  • China Tianying on the acquisition of Urbaser, a major Spanish company active in the waste treatment sector*
  • Cinven on the merger control aspects of the acquisition of a majority stake in the leading agri-food Spanish technology company Planasa*
  • Eurest Colectividades, the Spanish subsidiary of Compass Group, international leading provider of contract catering and support services, on i) the antitrust infringement proceedings for an alleged breach of Basque competition law launched by the Basque competition authorities and ii) the subsequent appeal before Tribunal Superior de Justicia del Pais Vasco and the Tribunal Supremo*
  • Fresenius and its subsidiary Helios Kliniken, Germany’s first private hospital operator, on the merger control aspects of the acquisition of Quirónsalud, Spain’s largest private hospital network*
