Rachael Astin is an associate in Latham & Watkins’ Entertainment, Sports & Media Practice, and is based in the London office.

Ms. Astin primarily handles media sector commercial and regulatory matters, with a particular focus on digital media and content distribution.

Ms. Astin’s practice includes:

  • Film, television, and other content distribution deals (including output deals and other complex rights licensing arrangements)
  • Broadcast, on-demand, and advertising regulatory advice
  • Linear television channel carriage
  • Content commissioning and production
  • Sponsorship arrangements and brand management
  • Commercial advice on media sector M&A and strategic joint venture arrangements

Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Astin worked in a leading international media and technology practice. She also has experience working in the Middle East. Ms. Astin spent 18 months in Dubai, working in the TMT team of the largest law firm in the region. During this time she advised local/international broadcasters and TV platforms on content commissioning, local production, and distribution activities. Ms. Astin also assisted international companies looking to do business in the UAE, as well as SMEs and government entities, on a variety of new media sector ventures.


Ms. Astin’s experience includes advising:

  • Facebook in its acquisition of sports distribution rights across the globe and related matters
  • Parkwood Entertainment (Beyoncé’s multimedia company) in connection with intellectual property protection and licensing matters
  • The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (General Sports Authority) (GSA) on its multi-year agreement with World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. (WWE) for WWE events exclusively in the MENA region
  • Netflix on the acquisition of Millarworld, the comic book company founded by Mark Millar, creator of a number of iconic characters and stories, including Kick-Ass, Kingsman, and Old Man Logan; the first-ever company acquisition by Netflix
  • Various production companies, broadcasters, and digital media services in connection with strategic business matters, including providing regulatory advice on EU Digital Single Market matters, the AVMS Directive, and the UK Ofcom Code
  • Moonbug Entertainment Limited, a digital-first kids entertainment company
  • A leading international advertising agency on its investment in a digital first talent management company*
  • BBC Worldwide on complex program licensing and JV arrangements*
  • On Ministry of Sound Recordings’ acquisition by Sony Music UK*
  • A major sports body on content and regulatory matters in the context of its launch of a new digital content platform*
  • A leading SVOD service on its output arrangements with major US studios and independents*
  • Various major UK channel groups on their channel carriage arrangements with Sky and Virgin Media*
  • Acting for leading TV drama producers on the establishment of an independent production company*
  • ITV on its acquisition of The Garden Productions, So Television, and Big Talk*
