Joseph Bargnesi is an associate in the Washington, D.C. office, where he is a member of the firm’s Litigation & Trial Department. Mr. Bargnesi’s practice focuses on white collar criminal defense, government and internal investigations, antitrust and competition matters, complex commercial litigation, and counseling clients on a range of regulatory compliance issues.
Mr. Bargnesi has significant experience representing clients in connection with government and internal investigations involving the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and other anti-corruption laws, US securities laws, Sherman Act and Federal Trade Commission Act, False Claims Act (FCA), anti-money laundering laws, trade control regulations, and other corporate misconduct. Mr. Bargnesi has represented clients before a broad range of government and regulatory agencies, including the Department of Justice (DOJ), Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), United Nations (UN), and World Bank. In addition, Mr. Bargnesi represents clients across a broad range of industries in complex antitrust, securities, and commercial litigation matters.
Mr. Bargnesi also counsels clients, including large public companies, private equity firms, investment banks, non-profit organizations, and trade associations on compliance with anti-corruption, anti-money laundering, trade control, data privacy, and competition laws. In this role, Mr. Bargnesi regularly counsels clients on the development, implementation, and evaluation of corporate compliance programs, as well as their public reporting obligations, corporate governance matters, and other issues relating to public company status. Mr. Bargnesi also has significant experience collaborating with forensic accountants and other subject matter experts, conducting transactional due diligence, developing and executing strategies regarding the communication of sensitive information to external stakeholders, and drafting various types of commercial agreements.
Before joining Latham & Watkins, Mr. Bargnesi interned at a boutique law firm specializing in class action antitrust and securities litigation. He also worked as a law clerk for the United States Attorney’s Office for Western District of New York, as well as United States Magistrate Judge F. Bradford Stillman on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. While in law school, Mr. Bargnesi served as an editor on the William & Mary Law Review, executive editor and founding member of the William & Mary Business Law Review, and a teaching assistant for Constitutional Law.
