SMART’s goal is to reduce Latham’s impact on the environment, conserve natural resources and energy, and operate in a sustainable and cost-effective manner.

Sustainability Initiative

Latham & Watkins has a multi-pronged sustainable resources program known as the SMART (Sustainable Measures and Recycling Tactics) initiative. It is a complement to the firm’s global Climate Change Practice.

Latham believes that everyone within the firm can play a daily role in reducing environmental impact, while conserving natural resources, and managing firm operations in a sustainable manner.

The SMART Initiative has many areas of focus, including:

  • Reducing Latham's use of energy and natural resources worldwide
  • Encouraging alternative methods of transportation
  • Promoting the recycling and reuse of paper, glass, aluminum, plastic and other products
  • Reducing the type and quantity of the waste the firm generates, and handling them in a responsible manner
  • Reusing and recycling office equipment, furniture and other durable materials
Making an Impact Locally

Individual offices at Latham have launched collaborative SMART initiatives that are often replicated in other locations. For example, the firm’s San Diego office developed a “SMART Commuter” online portal through which employees can access a commuter board with carpool and mass transit options. Lawyers and professional staff join by simply clicking on the community they commute from and adding other details, allowing them to connect with other Latham commuters in their neighborhood to save money and protect the environment.

Greening the Enterprise Globally

Latham’s SMART initiative has raised awareness of environmental stewardship within the firm, and has begun to produce impressive results. For example, duplex (two-sided) printing has gained wide-spread acceptance, and has increased every month since the SMART initiative was launched.
