Donald P. Newell, the former managing partner of the San Diego office, retired from Partnership on December 31, 2000. Mr. Newell had practiced law with the firm since 1964. His practice centered around insurance company and general corporate matters, and he represented clients generally in both routine and complex corporate financings, acquisitions and similar transactions. His clients included Mercury General Corporation and SCPIE Holdings Inc., leading publicly held California insurance holding companies.

An active member of the bar, Mr. Newell was a member of the Business Law Sections of the American, California and San Diego Bar Associations. He has served as chairman of both the Committee on Corporations and the Executive Committee of the Business Law Section of the State Bar of California. In addition, he has served as vice-chairman of the Business and Corporation Law Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. 

A frequent lecturer, Mr. Newell has been a panelist for numerous seminars given by the Practicing Law Institute, the Continuing Education of the Bar and the Corporate Counsel Institute on such topics as corporations, partnerships and business law. He authored Organizing Corporations in California (Continuing Education of the Bar, 1977 Supp.).
