Four Counsel Promoted to Partner at Latham & Watkins

The new partners include: Karg, an environmental lawyer; Margenet-Baudry, a capital markets lawyer; Vernetti, a bank finance lawyer; and Yan, a capital markets lawyer.

Latham & Watkins LLP1 is pleased to announce that four attorneys based in diverse international markets have been elected to the firm’s partnership, effective March 1, 2012. Each attorney was previously counsel at the firm. This group follows the recent election of 23 associates to the partnership, effective January 1, 2012.

The new partners include: Karl Karg, an environmental attorney in the firm’s Chicago office; Thomas Margenet-Baudry, a capital markets attorney in the Paris office; Lorenzo Vernetti, a bank finance attorney in the Milan office; and Karen Yan, a capital markets attorney in the Shanghai office.

New Partner Profiles

Chicago – Karl Karg

Karl Karg is a member of the firm’s Environment, Land & Resources Department, with deep experience in the areas of air quality, water quality, hazardous waste and contaminated sites, especially in the context of enforcement defense. Prior to joining the firm as an associate in 2001, he was Associate Regional Counsel for the US Environmental Protection Agency, Region V (Chicago), where he enforced environmental laws in the Midwest. In his practice, he routinely defends enforcement cases under the federal Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation & Liability Act, among other regulatory and permitting laws, and he also represents clients in litigation with citizen plaintiffs and advises on environmental aspects of transactional matters.

Paris – Thomas Margenet-Baudry

Thomas Margenet-Baudry is an attorney in the Corporate Department whose practice concentrates on capital markets transactions, with a particular focus on high yield debt and equity securities. He has represented issuers and underwriters on a broad range of French, international and US capital raising transactions, including initial public offerings, high yield financings, right issues and investment grade debt offerings. His practice also includes advising on French public M&A transactions and tender offer regulations, and he regularly assists clients on French and EU corporate governance and general securities regulation matters.

Milan – Lorenzo Vernetti

Lorenzo Vernetti is a member of the firm’s Finance Department with broad experience in banking law. He specializes in leveraged and corporate finance matters and debt restructurings, having advised on major leveraged buyouts for both domestic Italian and cross-border transactions, as well as multi-jurisdictional corporate and debt restructurings.

Shanghai – Karen Yan

Karen Yan has been a significant contributor to the development and expansion of the firm’s Greater China capital markets practice. She has played a lead role in advising clients in US and Hong Kong registered offerings, mergers and acquisitions and private equity transactions. She also advises public and private companies in online media and e-commerce, technology and renewable energy sectors on general corporate and commercial matters. Prior to joining Latham, she served as in-house counsel at a major energy company in the US. Yan speaks Mandarin and Shanghainese Chinese with native fluency and received her CPA qualification in the US.
