Latham & Watkins¹ is pleased to announce that US corporate partner Bryant Edwards has relocated to the firm’s Hong Kong office.
Edwards’ practice spans capital markets, Islamic finance, private equity finance, restructurings and workouts, and mergers and acquisitions. He has particularly deep experience advising on issuances and restructurings of debt products and is one of the world’s foremost authorities in high yield securities. He has advised issuers and underwriting banks in more than 100 bond offerings.
Among the leading practitioners in his field globally, Edwards has advised on numerous landmark transactions including, most recently, the representation of: the Dubai Financial Support Fund and the Government of Dubai in the US$30 billion restructuring of Dubai World and Nakheel; MB Holding in its US$320 million bond offering, the first conventional high yield bond offering in the Middle East; and the underwriters in the recent $4 billion sovereign sukuk issued by the State of Qatar, the largest dollar-denominated sukuk ever issued.
Michael Liu, Managing Partner of the firm’s Hong Kong office, said: “We are delighted to welcome Bryant to the team in Hong Kong. Bryant is a consummate dealmaker who brings deep knowledge and experience to the practice. His arrival further solidifies our stature in the market and underscores our deep commitment to the region. We remain resolutely focused on deepening our capability in Hong Kong and greater China and Bryant’s energy and experience will play a key role in our growth plans.”
“Bryant and I have worked closely since 2000 when we were both in our London office so I am delighted that we are together once again. I have witnessed firsthand his extraordinary talents so I have no doubt of the value he will bring to our Asia practice and our clients,” added Hong Kong-based finance partner David Miles who serves as Chair of Latham’s Asia practice.
“It’s an exciting time to join the team in Hong Kong and more broadly the region. Our Asia practice is of the highest quality and I look forward to contributing to the continued success of the practice,” said Edwards. “Asia’s ascent in the global economy is breathtaking and we are excited about the prospects for growth in the region. In particular, we see tremendous opportunities for our clients on the new Silk Road. Our strong capabilities, market knowledge and contacts in the Middle East and Asia will allow us to advise on the growing business ties and trade between these two regions.”
Edwards relocated to Hong Kong after four years in Dubai where he led the opening of the firm’s four Middle East offices and served as Chair of the firm’s Middle East Practice. Before Dubai, Edwards spent eight years in the firm’s London office, where he was Chair of the Corporate Department and focused on the development of the firm’s European high yield bond practice.
Edwards has held several senior industry positions including Chair of the European High Yield Association from 2004 to 2008, member of the Board of the Bond Market Association from 2007 to 2008, member of the Steering Committee of the Gulf Bond and Sukuk Association since 2010 and Chair of its Regulatory Committee from 2010 to 2012.
