Singapore
The Singapore office of Latham & Watkins, launched in 1997, is an important base from which the firm represents clients in South and Southeast Asia. Working closely with our other offices in Asia, we represent US, European and Asian companies conducting business throughout the Asia Pacific region and Asian companies in their direct investment activities and capital markets transactions both regionally and internationally.
The office has approximately 27 Singapore-based lawyers, all of whom are qualified in either US or English law.
Practice Areas
Our team in Singapore specializes in a range of practice areas including capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, private equity, banking, restructuring and all aspects of project development and finance, with a particular focus on energy projects. Within our Singapore office, we have one of the region's leading Indonesia practice groups, which has been involved in many of the most important infrastructure, mergers and acquisitions, restructurings, privatizations and corporate finance transactions in Indonesia in recent years. In addition, we have practice groups with expertise in countries across the region including India, South Korea, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, where we have extensive experience of advising on a broad range of transactions.
In 2008, our Southeast Asia Practice received a significant number of awards and rankings. These awards included "Equity Capital Markets" and "Project Finance" deals of the year from Asian Legal Business, "Asian Project Finance Team of the Year" from IFLR, and "Best Indonesia", "Best Singapore" and "Best India" deals from Finance Asia. Latham also received the highest number of awards in the inaugural Asia Law India Awards, winning Capital Markets and Banking & Finance deals of the year as well as the headline award of "International Law Firm of the Year".
Community Ties
The Singapore office has a strong commitment to serving the community. In recent years the Singapore office assisted pro bono client ForesTrade, a Vermont-based supplier of organic and sustainably produced tropical spices, oils and “Fair Trade” coffee, with negotiations for an export credit facility from the Overseas Private Investment Corporation. Attorneys in the Singapore office helped with the Indonesian market issues on loan documents and coordinated onshore documentation for the project with Indonesian counsel. The Singapore office also recently assisted with the establishment of Fundación Pacita, a foundation established to continue the artistic legacy of Phillipine-American artist Pacita Abad.
