Latham Launches Diversity Scholarship
Scholarship Forges Leadership Among Global Law Firms
October 10, 2005...Latham & Watkins LLP1 is pleased to announce the Latham Diversity Scholars Program, which will award $10,000 non-renewable scholarships to second-year law students for use during their third year of law school (2006-07). The applicants must be enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school and intend to practice law in a major city of the United States. Factors considered in choosing the Latham Diversity Scholars will include a candidate's:
- Ability to contribute to the diversity objectives of global law firms,
- Success in overcoming any obstacles or challenges faced in deciding to choose law as a profession,
- Academic and/or leadership achievements, and
- Desire to practice in a global law firm environment.
Scholars will be asked to submit an application form, personal statement, resume and official or unofficial law school transcript by December 1, 2005. Latham anticipates selecting four law students, and the scholarship is not contingent upon receiving or accepting an offer of employment at Latham. Rather, it is open to all law students in the hope that greater diversity among the attorneys at large law firms will benefit the entire profession. The inaugural Latham Diversity Scholars will be announced in spring 2006.
The Latham Diversity Scholars Program enhances Latham's efforts to recruit and hire diverse summer clerks and attorneys, which include ongoing initiatives such as an annual Diversity Weekend attended by law students receiving offers from the firm and various outreach efforts by Latham's Diversity Hiring Sub-Committee.
“Our uncompromising commitment to diversity is an integral component to our culture,” said Sharon Bowen, Chair of Latham's Diversity Hiring Sub-Committee. “Our attorneys, paralegals and staff throughout the world are composed of a rich mixture of men and women of different races, ethnic backgrounds, cultures and primary languages. We are strengthened enormously by this diversity and take pride in our efforts to support this important aspect of our firm and the legal profession, including this new diversity scholarship,” added Bowen.
“At Latham, we aspire to be a leader in the hiring, training and promotion of lawyers fairly and with attention to the goals of equal opportunity and diversity in the practice of law,” said Juli Wilson Marshall, Chair of Latham's Recruiting Committee.
